The second ending you quote, er... makes me think in a D&D session and one of the players getting a critic in his dices.

I mean: What kind of ending is that? For all the gods of fantasy writing! that is like having the withc at the gallow.

Deka, I know, and one of the authors was definitly a writer I'd read before and who would have known better it seems

Good one. Endings are hard. It's even more evident in movies, which can be fine until the last scenes, and then they just derail. [More to say over at Novel Spaces.]

Ron, and when you see such an ending it really just leaves you dissatisfied.
