As for the Super Bowl, I didn't have anything against either team. I actually like the Carolina Panthers. However, gotta admit I was hoping for a win for Peyton Manning. Although he certainly was not the MVP--the Denver defense was--I was happy to see someone from my adopted home (New Orleans) prove victorious. Plus, I've always had respect for Peyton's skills and for the fact that he seems genuinely like a decent fellow.

That short piece gives you something to ponder. Nice writing and imagination. I'm with you with the Superbowl, no real dog in the hunt even though I'm from NC, the Panthers came long after I left the state and Peyton will go down as one of the best. It was a defensive game.
Intense piece of writing leaving the question of what happens when patience runs thin unanswered. :)

Hmmm, I left a comment both there and here, but the one here seems to have vanished. So, I'll say agin, a powerful, evocative image-rich story, Charles. Very nice indeed. Good job.
You know? About two-thirds through that story, I wondered to myself if the narrator was one of the icons, or perhaps even a cross. It made the ending of the short piece that much more surreal to see that I was quite probably correct, though not confirmed solidly. It could be a spirit trapped in an inanimate object by a curse or other dark magic. Interesting.
As for Payton, I'm one of just a few people in Michigan who roots for him and his brother. I guess that's from being a native Tennessean, where he went to school and played. And I can tell you with 100% accuracy that people in Michigan hate him because they hold him personally responsible for the Wolverines having to share that national title during the 90's. Heh... sports silliness. I just like to watch games unfold, and learn different takes on strategy. I could do without all the posturing and poor attitude

eric1313, yes, I seldom watch the pregame or postgame stuff. I just like the actual game.
My daughter had us record the Stupor Bowl so that should could watch the commercials. And I watched right up until Newtown had that prima donna moment with the fumble.
On the other hand, I just read your story and I loved how it was told from the cross's p.o.v. Very, very cool and ingenious.
