A New Quiz: Vampires

Oh, those pesky vampires. Blood suckers extraordinaire. The first vampires in literature were evil. But over time vampires took on more and more romantic and sympathetic elements until today they can even be leading men. Can you match the famous vampires from page and screen on the left with their creators on the right? Zero to five correct means you’re either covering for the vamps or you’re VQ is a little low. Six to ten correct is a good score. You’ve probably bitten a few necks yourself. Over ten correct makes me wonder if the phrase “blood bank” has more than the usual meaning for you.

1. Vampirella (1st issue) ............... Laurell K. Hamilton
2. Carmilla ........................... Anne Rice
3. Saint-Germain ...................... Whitley Strieber
4. Molochai, Twig, & Zillah ............. Suzy McKee Charnas
5. Prince Vulkan ...................... Robert R. McCammon
6. Edward Weyland ...................... T. Prest OR M. Rymer
7. David Lyle Hardwick ................. Stephen King
8. Jean-Claude ......................... P. N. Elrod
9. Jonathan Barrett .................... Nancy Kilpatrick
10. Dracula .............................. J. Sheridan Le Fanu
11. Joshua York ......................... Forrest Ackerman
12. Miriam Blaylock ...................... Chelsea Quinn Yarbro
13. Varney .............................. Poppy Z. Brite
14. Barlow .............................. George R. R. Martin
15. Lestat .............................. Bram Stoker

Answers: (Author's Last name only) 1. Ackerman, 2. Le Fanu, 3. Yarbro, 4. Brite, 5. McCammon, 6. Charnas, 7. Kilpatrick, 8. Hamilton, 9. Elrod, 10. Stoker, 11. Martin, 12. Streiber, 13. Prest or Rymer, 14. King, 15. Rice.

What about Mircalla?

Hmmm... have you done shape-shifters?

Evan Lewis said...

Two. As a vampire scholar, I suck.

benjibopper said...

I got one right. I did love Salem's Lot many years ago - that was vamps right?

Strangely tho, I happen to be reading a vamp story now, one with a vamp as leading man (but not the one everybody else is reading). It's pretty good stuff.

only got three... can you tell i'm not a huge vamp fan? :O lol

Artsparker, I haven't yet but that's a good idea for a quiz

Evan, two? apparently you don't suck enough, man.

Benjibopper, Salem's lot may have been the first vamp story I read. I did like it a lot.

Laughingwolf, I thought you'd read everything man. :)

I got one right Lestat. But then I have bitten more than a couple of necks...you know how it is when you're young and don't mind bar fighting.

Randy Johnson said...

I got three. Don't read a lot of vampire stuff. Stoker, King, early Rice is about it.

X. Dell said...

Fangs a lot. I only got two correct, which is necks to nothing. I suck at vampire games.

As Richard Pryor said, "You wanna suck my what? Better suck yourself on out of here, Junior."

I love Carmilla. I know her since childhood. Best vampire character i've ever seen. She can best the old carpatian leech anywhere and anytime. (just joking, i love them both! ;D )

BernardL said...

I'd like to pretend I'm covering for them. :)

Ty Johnston said...

Seven. Not too shabby, but not awesome.

I am hopeless here, two.

Steve Malley said...

A humble six...

Three. But where's Count Chocula?

Travis Cody said...

I did not do well with this one...I only got 3!

Charles Gramlich said...

Mark, bitten a few ears too perhaps?

Randy Johnson, I bet you’d like the Robert McCammon, “They Thirst.” Awesome book.

X. Dell, but your puns are top notch.

Deka Black, I like Carmilla better than Dracula too, although I do like them both.

BernardL, Lancelot has met a few vamps in his day.

Ty Johnston, that makes you the champion so far.

pattinase (abbott), yep, covering for them for sure.

Steve Malley, you and TY are doing the best so far.

Cloudia, I figured most everyone would get Dracula and Carmilla and Lestat. I see I was optimistic. :)

JR's Thumbprints, you know, if I’d have thought of him I’d have put him in.

Travis Cody, carmilla, Dracula and lestat?

David J. West said...

Trending, I suck-2.

Harry Markov said...

Two? Ah, I suck with names and that is that, but thanks for the quiz. :)

Yay, I finally got a hndful right. Fun quizzes yuo come up with, Mr. G.

Have yuo read 'Let The Right One In'? Just finished it last week. It had ths way of mixing innocence with monstrousity. Just fantastic.

Charles Gramlich said...

David J. West, I bet you'd do better with a Heroic fantasy quiz. I may have to do one of those.

Harry Markov, apparently vampires are not quite the rage I thought they might be.

Jodi MacArthur, I haven't read that one. SOunds interesting though. I'll check it out.

Randy Johnson said...

I have THEY THIRST around, just haven't gotten to it yet. I believe Bill used it on a Forgotten Books and I picked it up.

sage said...

Okay, I admit, I have a very low VQ--knowing only Dracula and Lestat...

Charles Gramlich said...

Randy, it's gory as hell. I liked it a lot, although McCammon apparently doesn't care for it himself in retrospect.

Sage, I figured most would get those. I thought more would get Carmilla too but that may require some study in the gothic area.

laughingwolf said...

i have certain 'limits', now that i'm OLD ;) lol

ivan said...

I wouldn't know Boris Karloff from Bela Lugosi, but the roles both portray are from great literature.

I'm sure the great William Faulkner must have read Dracula, but back in ole Miss., before he made it, he was still known as Count No Count.
Hey, me too, around here. But it's Halloween. Got cape!

Charles Gramlich said...

Laughingwolf, ain't we all.

Ivan, I can't tell those two apart either. I never watched those old movies, or at least not much.

jodi said...

Charles, the only one I could identify is Jonathan Frid as Barnabus Collins, and he didn't even make the list!

Lana Gramlich said...

I'm not big on vampires, so I only got the obvious 2 (Lestat & Dracula,) right. Pardon the pun, but I suck.

Charles Gramlich said...

Jodi, I should have put him on there too. HIm and Count Chocula should be on this quiz.

Charles Gramlich said...

Lana you are forgiven.

Danette Haworth said...

I need to wear garlic at all times. I answered only two correctly.

Middle Ditch said...

Not good at this. I only know Bram Stoker! :-(

moonrat said...

oh dear. only 2.

Charles Gramlich said...

Danette, I eat a lot of garlic so I'm safe.

Middle ditch, well it's not weighted toward British vamps so maybe that's why.

Moonrat, At least I don't have to worry about losing any blood around the majority of this blog's readers. :)

Barrie said...

I'm horrible at this. Which is good or bad, depending on your perspective!

Rick said...

Sorry to show up so late, Charles, but I'm like Evan Lewis. As a vampire scholar, I suck!

Charles Gramlich said...

Barrie, I suppose I'll have to forgive you. :)

Rick, I should do a bigfoot quiz, man. or you should.

Mary Witzl said...

Sigh... I got three. Apparently I'm no vampire scholar either. I'd have been thrilled to get five!

Heff said...

AHHHHH !!! Heff FAILED miserably !!

(Hey, Stake Me. I'm not a huge vampire fan)

Charles Gramlich said...

Mary, best stay away from the goth clubs.

Heff, I will try to live with my disappointment. :)
