Father's Day, Sushi, and Talera

G., over at Cedar’s Mountain has a review of the second Talera Novel, Wings Over Talera. He is apparently an extremely discerning fellow, seeing as how he liked the book quite a lot. Thanks for the kind words, G.

My son came out Saturday for Father’s Day since he had to work a double shift on Sunday. We had a great time. We went to my favorite sushi place. We had our first official beer together while out to eat. After that we did some target shooting with my air pistol, watched Pale Rider, and then he helped me set up my DVD with surround sound. He also bought me the five disk collected works of White Zombie, which to me was better stuff than the material that Rob Zombie has produced separately since. Good kid!

I’ve been on a real sushi kick lately. I had it twice last week on Monday, then Saturday and Sunday this weekend. Love the stuff. Maybe part of it is the variety of the meal. There are many different flavors to a typical sushi meal. I’m a big fan of tuna in all its varieties, especially tuna tataki and pepper tuna. I’ll probably go again tomorrow.

Mmmmm, sushi! wish someplace in my town made real sushi. Heck, I could murder a California roll, even!

Not a Sushi fan, here. I guess you can say I kicked it.

grats on the time with your son, charles, always important... and also on the collection...

as for the sushi, both my older daughter and i love the stuff too, but be careful with all tuna, they contain mercury so it's recommended to eat the stuff no more than once a week, less often is better...

About as close to sushi I ever got was oysters on the half shell. That I enjoyed, much to my surprise, so it's possible I'll try it someday.

Brian and I are going out for sushi tonight for our anniversary. We're going to one of our fave places -- Tokyo One. It's an all-you-can-eat sushi bar and they serve some fun and delicious varieties. I also love tuna. White Tuna sashimi is my favorite. But it's very rich, and I can only have a few pieces. YUm, yum! (I would have it more often if it weren't so expensive.) And, sounds like you had a fun Father's Day outing. I can't believe your son is old enough to drink legally. crazy!

I could never understand the appeal of sushi, but that's just me. I used to have co-workers who eat sushi five or six times a week, and actually got quite upset when they had to cut back on it due budgetary problems.

Glad you had a whiz bang day Sunday. Always good to have quality time with the offspring

Many thanks for the link to the post and for the compliments as well.

Sounds like a first class son you got there, Charles.

I WISH that I liked sushi - I am so boring.

I'm glad that you and Josh had a good time together yesterday. Sounds like he knows what his dad likes!

Oh! And congratulations on the good review. That is excellent.

Christine likes sushi a lot. Sounds like it was a great Father's Day.

writtenwyrdd, we've got a couple of good places here. Strangely, though, when I was in Austin it was hard to find good sushi. I found a great place only a few days before we left come back home.

Heff, I wouldn't have thought years ago that I'd like it but the right stuff is some good to me.

laughingwolf, I typically eat once every two weeks in summer, and quite a bit less often during the school year. I do worry about the mercury.

Randy Johnsonm, I actualy didn't like oysters. A big difference is that you can bite into sushi. Oysters are said to be best swallowed whole.

Gabby, Josh will be 22 in another week, amazingly enough. But yes, I like white tuna as well. Escalar is such a sweet tasting meat that practically melts in your mouth.

G, Sushi is expensive, which keeps me from eating it that often, but I like to get it with my son or for special occassions. Thanks to you for the good review.

Cloudia, Josh is such a sweetheart that he did all his rebelling in a year and a half and got it out of his system. He nearly killed me in that year and a half, but after that he was fine.

jennifer, Lana doesn't like it at all either. She goes with me on occassion and gets something like their baked Teriyaki chicken.

Sidney, I had something called white tuna tataki the other day that I'd almost kill to have again.

Charles,

Belated Happy Father's Day, my friend.

I'm not a huge fan of sushi, but I do have it occasionally...congrats on the good Talera review.

Now that sounds like an outstanding way to spend Father's Day.

Any comment I would make here could be construed as carping criticism.
Ever try caviar? It's a bit of let-down too.

p.s.:

Good reviews are hard to come by. Congrats.

Very good review! I'll skip the sushi. :)

Charles Gramlich said...

Scott, thanks. I'm not a sushi fanatic but I am a fan

Travis, mucho enjoyable. Yes.

ivan, I don't think they make sushi out of carp. I've had caviar once. It tasted very salty to me. But I'm told that's because I didn't get the good stuff.

Mark, probably so, considering I always rode Hondas

Wil, yeah, I much enjoyed myself. Not that I very seldom work tremendously hard anyway.

BernardL, thanks. And thanks for skippng the sushi. More for me. ;)

Glad to hear you had a nice, relaxing Fathers' Day. And congratulations!

I love sushi too! That first jolt of wasabi, like snorting drain cleaner, it just hurts so good.

Hey Charles,

You must have done something really right with your son -- that gift is COOL!!!!!!! Love the sushi as well -- I didn't take to it right away, but eventually came to a great joy of a roll called the Marlon Brando.

Charles Gramlich said...

Ello, I crave a lot of chicken, steak and pork chops so I couldn't eat sushi every day. But four or five times a week I could handle.

Candy, thanks. yeah, it was a good day. I saw your post about the weather. That's crazy about I55

Elaine Ash, the pepper tuna has a powerful kick as well. Makes your mouth smart.

Michelle, I've never had the Marlon Brando. Will have to look for that. Josh introduced me to sushi back when he was taking a class in cultures of the world. They took him to eat at a sushi place. At first he just tried california roll but soon he and I were going once a week to all you can eat sushi and scarfing up the tuna sashimi. I've gained a greater appreciation of it over the years as well as I've ventured out to try new things.

Happy Father's Day, Charles. Sounds like it was outstanding. I love sushi. Last March we caught sushi grade tuna and iced it and made up sauce while it chilled. Yummy! The chefs locally make me these cool strawberries cut into lotus flowers!

wise moves, charles...

I am slowly coming over to sushi because of its low calorie content. Go, Charles, with the good reviews!

Charles Gramlich said...

jodi, thanks. uhm that sounds wonderful. Fresh fresh fresh sushi.

laughingwolf, yup.

pattinase, that's a nice benefit. Although I use too much soy sauce and probably get more salt than I should that way.

Sushi: good!

Eastwood western: good!
Those Talera books: great!

Sounds like one heck of a fine day!!!

You might be an Indpendent or a Democrat. I read a survey saying GOPers prefer steak day after day, Dems like to try different foods
;->

I guess that has something to do with curiosity and an open mind, and the quest, a thirst for life . . .

Congrats on a well-dserved cool review and, belated Happy Father's Day your way!

Charles Gramlich said...

Steve Malley, thanks man. Strangely enough, I agree with you right down the line. ;)

Erik, Lana says she and I are libertarians. I tend to eat quite a few different foods, although almost always some type of meat. I have my favorites at certain restruants that I go to. That's kind of weird about different party affiliations being associated with different foods. Could be an age thing?

Barbara Martin, indeed. It's an experience.

L.A. Mitchell, thanks. Yes, we had a lot of fun.

I <3 sushi. I have about four sushi places within walking distance from my condo and three within walking distance from work. Good stuff. Only within the past couple of months have I branched out to try "proper sushi" instead of the maki rolls. Gets so expensive though, so I have to watch myself :)

Sounds like you had a nice father's day with your son. Your white zombie disk collection sounds really nice!

Also, congrats on the review! I haven't gotten around to reading your books yet, but I did go out and get your first one. Hope to have time to read it over 4th of July. Looks really good :)

Charles Gramlich said...

Lauren, yes, sushi can be really expensive. I don't often get the rolls anymore but I do like some good California roll or Crunchy roll. Hope you enjoy the book. Thanks for getting it.
