Battles, Broadswords, and Bad Girls

I'd normally leave the last post in my "100 Books Everyone Should Read" series up a bit longer, but I have breaking news I want to share with the crew. Many of you may remember the award nominated story that Chris F. Holm set up over at Beat to a Pulp featuring Simon Rip through time. The next installment of this serial story is up now over there, and it's by yours truly. It's called Battles, Broadswords, and Bad Girls." I hope you'll check it out.

Before you read the story itself, though, you might want to check out David Cranmer's post about the story and about where it's been and where it's going. That's over at his personal website.

Thanks for tuning in.

  2. Just finished-great segment of an ongoing piece. I love your prose -

"The hands were huge, the gnarled hands of a fisherman."

"the sheared odor of copper smeared the air."

"Rip's sword hummed its own song."

  5. Very good story. You beat the Quantum Time Manipulation scientists to the time travel trick I see. :)

  6. What a grand experiment Rip's turning out to be. Enjoy your time at the helm! I'll slide over and make room on the bench for you, and together we'll see where this wild and wooly tale ends up...

  7. SQT, thankee.

David, glad you enjoyed man. I had fun with the Hemingway thing.

    Deka, appreciate it.

Randy, David actually suggested the possibility of a Merlin connection but it fit my wishes for sure.

Bernardl, I've read a little about quantum physics. I certainly understand nothing of what I've read. But occassional a term stays with me. :)

Chris, thanks. I enjoyed it a lot. You got us onto a fast track on this one. I'm looking forward to what David does next with this too.

  21. You did an awesome follow up to the first episode. What a ride! What you wrote about 6th century squirrels amused me because your wife called them fat bastards on her post the other day and that cracked me up. They must be real pests were you live! ;-)

  22. Jodi, sometimes we'll have 8 squirrels in the backyard at the same time, all fat off our seeds. And they run back and forth on our roof like a herd of hippos.

  23. Man, that's a wild ride -- I dig it! Even in late afternoon, I'm awake again!

  25. Bad girls--some of them the good guys.

A new wrinkle in time or in Arthurian mythology?

BTW, what is it with you and Hemmingway?

  26. "Beat to a Pulp" has some cool stories. I'll be returning soon.

  27. X-Dell, me and Hemingway? In this case, Rip was created as a cigar smoking sort of fellow, which made me think of Havana, which made me think of Hemingway. I don't think I've ever put Hemingway into any other of my stories though.

    JR., they do indeed. Thanks.

  28. How exciting was that! You sure know how to tell a tale, it kept me hooked til the end. Good writing. well done.

  34. I really like the title. This is my last stop of the evening (morning actually?) so I will have to check out the link tomorrow (today - Ha!) when I am more alert.

  35. Akasha Savage, thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed!

Heff, wondered if you were still alive. I figured one of those restruants you visited had come close to doing you in. :)

ivan, check out Heff's blog if you haven't already. He's got stuff right down your alley.

    Rick, thanks, man.

Merisi, they are certainly an attraction.

    X. Dell, oh yes, that's true. Had almost forgotten that. I was just thinking fiction. Hey, even Bradbury had his Hemingway stories. :)

jennifer, the pattern of the titles was suggested by David, although the specifics were left up to me.
